When we neglect to care for our pet’s teeth properly, we are allowing them to become susceptible to a wide range of health conditions. The process begins with bacteria. Bacteria thrives in the mouth, as it’s a dark and damp environment. The more bacteria that grows, the more is found on the teeth as plaque. Plaque is the sticky film that forms on your teeth that you brush off each morning and night. Dogs and cats can’t brush their own teeth, so this often layers on the teeth as time passes.
After plaque develops in layers, it can harden and form tartar. Tartar is a hardened form of plaque that can build up on teeth and lead to extensive dental damage. In addition to oral issues like gum disease and dental decay, your pet may be susceptible to conditions like heart disease and bone loss. This is due to our pet’s mouths being directly connected to their circulatory system. As such, bacteria that is in the mouth can travel into the blood and cause health problems. That’s why it’s so important to care for your cat and dog’s teeth.
At Northwood Animal Hospital, we are here to help. We offer comprehensive dental exams and cleanings for cats and dogs and will do whatever we can to maintain and improve their oral health. We also offer dental x-rays and extractions.
